A Quick Backstory on My Start as a New Affiliate Marketer.
In 2008 I discovered affiliate marketing and started my first website(s) promoting children’s products, toys, weight-loss products, internet marketing and SEO products, etc. Apart from golfing equipment, those were the niches that made successful affiliate marketers the most money back then.
Like most, I googled “how to make money as an affiliate marketer” and had to sift through a whole bunch of BS. Eventually, I landed on an affiliate marketing mentoring program called “True Guru,” a video course created by a guy named Matthew Bredel (I even thanked him years later via social media on LinkedIn, and he responded in kind, cool guy.)
It taught me all the basics and a lot more on how to get started with affiliate marketing; it gave me the confidence to go out and start buying domains, generating leads and delving into Search Engine Optimization (SEO) to create passive income.
In 2009, I made quite a few sales and felt confident enough to quit my last full-time job and pursue my affiliate marketing work which I thought was a no-brainer at the time.
Honestly, I didn’t make enough affiliate sales to actually leave, but I did anyway. I thought, “if I could make $XXX per month with affiliate marketing with only 2 hours of work a day, I could make $XXXXX if I did it full-time.”
So I went to work for my 6 AM shift (data call centre), took one call and assisted a very friendly and thankful old lady; by 6:20, I had taken off my headset, smiled and wrote a short immediate resignation.
I handed it in and was out of the office by 6:30 to go and pursue what seemed like the perfect business opportunity, affiliate marketing.

My Failing Affiliate Business - The Short Version
Long story short, my affiliate sales weren’t consistent enough. So in 2010, I was desperate to turn my fortunes around, as everyone around me tried to convince me to find a job and do affiliate marketing part-time like I was before.
I refused, took my last $100 and paid for a program called “My Millionaire Mentor” by Michael Cheney, a highly successful affiliate marketer that’s been around since the beginning. That affiliate marketing mentoring program really opened my eyes to how it works. To this day, I haven’t seen this anywhere on YouTube.
Millionaire Mentor Program - In a Nutshell
Let me start by saying that I can’t entirely agree with ALL the techniques used and promoted by Michael Cheney, nor do I use many of them. The course was more focused on Internet Marketing, but he taught how affiliate marketing works and told you exactly how he got you to buy the offer and how he’ll attempt to continue to sell to you.
He didn’t intend to make you feel like a fool who knows nothing about real affiliate income or marketing techniques, but exposing all the emotions that drove you to buy and led to a sale (for him.) It sometimes came off very cocky as you went through each part of this video course on digital and affiliate marketing.
He’d tell you how he used his affiliate link strategically to get you to sign up and how to drive traffic and generate a full-time income as an affiliate or internet marketer.
But, unfortunately, I realized that some of these guys (like Cheney) have networks that cross-promote each other and make each other rich, sometimes promoting utter garbage and making you believe you’re winning the lottery.
So that’s the part I’m not a fan of; a bit of a scummy side of internet marketing if you ask me. I like affiliate earnings and want to earn money honestly and ethically. I’d never promote something I have not tried at one point or another. I’d never ask someone for good reviews in exchange for the same on their offers.
So no. If you want to review us, that’s great. That would be real.
Anyway, I am getting off track here. Back to starting a successful affiliate marketing business.
It all taught me a lot. In 2011 I started turning my fortunes around and shifting my focus towards SEO, which boosted my affiliate sales by creating content and optimizing it for search engines. I became addicted to SEO, but affiliate marketing is one of my primary sources of income.
I’ve wasted a LOT of money on a TON of garbage trying to find what works and what doesn’t when it comes to affiliate marketing. Software, services, ebooks, video courses, you name it. What worked best was finding a 1-on-1 mentor.
Fast Forward to 2023
I’ve never looked back since quitting my job in 2009, it’s been a rough few years with many ups and downs, but here I sit, knowing that soon, that affiliate link I’ve placed out there somewhere will make me money today and continue to do so in the coming weeks/months/years.

The first sale I made from an affiliate link came after about a month of trying to figure out how it all works. That sounds bad, but the truth is that it's more than what most affiliate marketers make who are just starting out without any proper guidance.
What's worse, is that the commission I earned back then wasn't even $10, I believe it was some toy castle from Amazon that I promoted in a blog post. I was thrilled, man, there's nothing like that first sale!
That was the first glimpse of what it would be like to have your own business generating passive income for years to come.
I only REALLY started making decent affiliate income in 2011, it took me 3 years because I wasn't willing to invest in myself, instead being as cheap as possible and not really getting anywhere financially.
