What is Tiered Link Building in SEO?
Last week, I got bombarded with questions concerning multi-tier link wheels, what they are, and how they work. So, instead of answering everyone one by 1, I’ve decided to explain the use of link wheels in this post, what it is, why we use it, and how it works! Okay, let’s go…
As you know, off-page SEO means promoting and building your website backlinks to increase your search engine rankings, right? Of course, right? Now, the problem we face when building backlinks is getting those links indexed, in other words, indexed so that the Googlebot notices your links and gives you credit where it’s due.
Did you know that if you don’t manually do something to get your backlinks indexed, over 90% of them will never be found? Sad, but that’s the harsh truth of the matter. Even if you HAVE an indexer (used to index your built backlinks) or manually submit your links to RSS feeds, you’ll STILL only get about 20-40% of them noticed and indexed by Google and other search engines.
So what happens to the other 60-80% of the links you’ve built? Well, they’re lost and utterly useless unless… (This is where “link wheels” come into play)
What is Linkwheels, Exactly?
In short, link wheels are building backlinks to your backlinks, drastically improving the chances that your links will be found and indexed. This process is common SEO practice for off-page optimization and improving your website’s rankings in search engines. Unfortunately, building one set of links to your built backlinks is not always enough, but it sure beats doing nothing and will drastically increase the indexing process.
The problem with creating these link wheels is that each tier has to have many more links pointing to the higher tier. But before I get ahead of myself, let me explain what” multi-tie” link wheels are and why they’re so effective (by the way, this is more than just getting your links indexed).
Okay, so what does” Multi-Tier” mean?
Let me try and make this as short as possible. I’ll start by explaining what it is; then, I’ll tell you why it’s such a widespread practice (if done correctly) within the SEO community.”What is Multi-Tier Linkwheels” Tier 1″ links are the backlinks pointing directly to YOUR website. These should be the most relevant and have the highest PR (PageRank) and the lowest OBL (external links). Tier 1 links are not about quantity but rather quality. Remember that one high PR link is worth over 100 links without PR. The same goes for relevancy and OBL; the more relevant the page your backlink is on, the better. OBL also determines the quality of the link ” link juice” or” link value”). Never forget that!”Tier 2″ links are the links pointing to your Tier 1 links. They don’t have to have the exact anchor text as those of the 1st tier as long as the anchor text is relevant in some way. The same SEO backlink-building principles apply here when using anchor text diversity, anchor Urls, and generic text when building backlinks.
Know that Tier 3 points to Tier 2, making them stronger and increasing the chances that your Tier 2 (and Tier 1) links get found and indexed; Tier 4 points to 3 and Tier 5 points to 4. It’s as simple as that. Also, note that the lower tiers (2-5) will/should each have significantly more backlinks pointing to the higher tier to increase the power and odds of it getting found. Here’s a quick example:
- Tier 1 -> 10 links are pointing to your site. (about 1-2 will get indexed naturally, or roughly 3-4 with the help of an indexer or RSS feed submissions).
- Tier 2 -> 100 links points to tier 1 (10 tier 2 links for each backlink in tier 1, increasing the index rate to about 3-4 without indexing software or RSS).
- Tier 3 -> 1000 links pointing to tier 2 (again, 10 tier 3 links for each tier 2 link, increasing the chances of tier 1 links in this example; to about 5).
And so on…
But why build Multi-Tier Linkwheels otherwise?
Each tier increases the chances that your leading (most vital) Tier 1 links get indexed. Each lower tier passes more” link juice” to the higher tier, making it more robust by increasing its authority. So, the more tiers there are, the stronger your Tier 1 links will become (more link value = higher/faster rankings).
Some people will argue that this method has proven itself to be highly effective time and time again. However, any genuine SEO expert will tell you that multi-tier link wheels are the way to go because it is. Not only does it help you rank faster (with fewer tier 1 links), but it also makes the process seem more natural in the eyes of the search engines and drastically decreases the risk of getting penalized by Panda or Penguin algorithms.
Using multiple tiers is 100% Panda/Penguin safe if done correctly, but know that it can also be disastrous if you’re not careful and don’t know EXACTLY what you’re doing. So why not let my team of SEO professionals take care of this for you?
